From Coarse to Fine Sanding: How to Choose the Right Abrasive and Grit

In automotive refinishing, furniture manufacturing, metalworking and industrial coating applications, choosing the right abrasive is not simply a matter of using the finest grit available.
Different stages of surface preparation require different abrasive materials and grit sizes.
Coarse grits are generally used for removing old paint, rust and major surface defects. Medium grits are suitable for leveling and reducing scratches left by coarse sanding. Finer grits are typically used for final preparation before painting or coating.
UCAG offers several types of dry sanding abrasives, including standard abrasive paper, sponge abrasives, ceramic abrasives and mesh abrasives. Selected product ranges cover grit sizes from approximately P40 to P1000, supporting different stages from aggressive material removal to fine finishing.
Ceramic abrasives provide strong cutting performance and durability, while mesh abrasives allow dust and sanding debris to pass through more easily, making them particularly suitable for dust extraction sanding systems.
Selecting the right abrasive can help improve sanding efficiency, reduce unnecessary abrasive consumption and create a more consistent surface for subsequent coating processes.
